The South Bend Kroc Center has devised an innovative new program to hire and train future lifeguards.
Our Lifeguard Training Program allows us to immediately hire candidates who want to work towards achieving their Red Cross Lifeguard Certification.
When considering candidates for the Lifeguard Training Program, we extend interview invitations to prospective applicants at our primary campus, situated at 900 W Western Ave, South Bend, 46601.
This interview is split into two parts. First, candidates will meet with our Aquatic Manger to assess swimming ability. This swimming assessment allows us to see how close a candidate is to entering the Red Cross’ Lifeguarding Class and identify what we will need to focus on in the training period. Please bring swimwear, googles if needed, and a towel for this first portion of the interview.
Once the candidate has attempted these skills, they dry off and change to get ready to meet with our Human Resource Specialist & Aquatic Manager to conduct the second part of the interview.
In this part of the interview, candidates are asked questions to help us get to know you better. To help you prepare, we have listed some examples of questions that may be asked:
- What motivated you to pursue a position as a lifeguard?
- How do you handle challenging or stressful situations, especially in a fast-paced environment?
- How do you plan to communicate effectively with both children and adults in a pool setting?
Both parts of the interview should be concluded within 30 minutes. Successful candidates will then be offered a job as a ‘Pool Slide Attendant’. This position pays $12/ hour for up to 19 hours/ week.
This role enables The Kroc Center to compensate you during the training period. Individuals enrolled in the Lifeguard Training Program experience a significantly elevated success rate in obtaining the Red Cross Lifeguard Certification.
As soon as you have attended a New Hire Orientation, our Aquatic Manager will begin to schedule you for shifts in our amazing Aquatic Center. During these shifts, you will work on a variety of skills including:
- Building your swimming endurance and skills
- Learning the Aquatic Center Rules
- Mastering the Emergency Action Plan (EAP)
- Operating the slide
- Mastering CPR and delivering emergency oxygen.
For some of these shifts, you will even have the opportunity to work with one of our talented Water Safety Instructors to increase your proficiency in all of the swimming strokes.
When our Aquatic Manager is satisfied with your skill development, you will be entered into the next available Lifeguarding class! The best thing about this is, that the Kroc Center pays you for your time spent completing the class and covers the cost of the certification. Then, contingent on you passing the Red Cross test, your wage will increase to $15/ hour.
Applicants must be at least 15 years old. We encourage interested parties to apply at mykroc.org/ jobs. Please visit that link, click on ‘Job Openings’, and apply for the ‘Pool Slide Attendant’ position.
